Why You Should Insulate Your Windows This Summer

How Insulation Improves HVAC System Efficiency

There are a ton of ways to increase the efficiency of our HVAC systems. In seasons of heavy-use like summer with our AC, one of those ways is to keep that air-conditioned air inside your home. Just like it’s inefficient to leave your refrigerator open, allowing a lot of air to escape will force your AC to work harder. Luckily, it’s not too hard to create a solid enough seal on your home, so that your HVAC system remains efficient.

You can’t and shouldn’t make your home airtight, but you can certainly minimize the number of air leaks. Consider the areas most likely to cause issues: doors and windows. Luckily, there are great products you can use to fill those small air gaps to prevent air leaks.

Types of Insulation

  • Insulation Wrap. These kits can be picked up at your local hardware store and are simple to apply to your window. These are essentially a film that you apply to the window. That additional layer makes a big difference in preventing temperature loss through that window.
  • Weather Stripping. Weather stripping plugs up gaps in your doors and windows where air can leak out. They can be made out of vinyl, rubber, or foam, but these all pretty much work the same way.

Just like in anything, there is always room for improvement for your HVAC efficiency. Insulation is just one piece of the puzzle and is going to have the biggest impact in the parts of the year when you are using your system a lot. However, in order to maximize your system, you’ll want to incorporate things like smart thermostats and consistent air filter changes every month.
