How to Clean My Home’s Humidifier

Did you know that you could be breathing in mold, mildew, and bacteria during the time it took you to read this? If you are like most homeowners, you are concerned with the air quality in your home. However, if your home humidifier goes too long without a thorough cleaning, you could be contaminating your air with the very appliance meant to purify it.

How Do I Clean My Humidifier?

Below, you will find step-by-step instructions for how to make your home an easier place to breathe through proper humidifier cleanings. For more information on how you can improve the performance of your residential humidifier, we recommend you consult with an experienced heating and cooling contractor. There are many different types of humidifiers, which is why you should also read your owner’s manual before you do any cleaning.

1. Rinse Filter – Before doing any cleaning, make sure that you unplug your humidifier. After that, you’ll want to remove the filter and run some cold water over it to wash away contaminants. Allow humidifier filter to air dry.

2. Soak Tank in Vinegar – Separate the tank from the humidifier and pour out any remaining water. Then, fill the tank with 3 cups of vinegar. Make sure the vinegar touches every surface of the tank before letting it sit. If you notice any contaminant stuck to the bottom of the tank after an hour has passed, you may use a scrub brush to clean the tank. Rinse with clean water.

3. Wipe Down Humidifier – The rest of the humidifier will be cleaned using a sponge dampened with vinegar and water. While you may be tempted to skip this step, it actually helps prevent future mold or bacteria growth by making sure contaminants don’t find their way inside the humidifier.

How Often Do I Clean My Humidifier?

During the winter, it can be tempting to have your humidifier on all the time. However, when your humidifier is being used every day, you need to make sure you set aside time to clean it. During times of heavy use, we recommend cleaning your humidifier every three days with vinegar. Also, be sure to check the owner’s manual for their cleaning instructions.

Why Should I Clean My Humidifier?

If you want you and your family to stay healthy, make sure that your indoor air quality isn’t threatened by your humidifier. If mold, mildew, or bacteria is allowed to grow inside your humidifier, the air contaminants can cause itchy eyes or even skin rashes. People with asthma also benefit the most from clean humidifiers. Any knowledgeable heating and cooling company will tell you that there are many benefits of home humidifiers when they work properly.
