How to Handle Thermostat Wars at Home

Summer is well underway and with the COVID-19 crisis, we are seeing so many people cramped up in their homes. You put a few people in a warm house and there will be conflict around the thermostat! We’ll give you some tips to avoid “thermostat wars” in the home this summer.

Be Smart

Smart thermostats are one of the best investments you can make for your home’s HVAC. There’s a simple reason why. Smart thermostats can set your home’s temperature to a schedule throughout the day. This should keep temperatures in line with what you want throughout the day. If you’re still having problems with your kids changing the thermostat manually, you can set up your thermostat to be compatible with your phone. This way you can at least continue the thermostat war without getting up off the couch!

So You Lost the Battle…

How to Deal with the Cold

Whether as a result of putting the needs of others before yourself or because you want to avoid a long fight, you’re now cold in your own home. We recommend you consider wearing layers and especially wear socks. Science has shown that we lose most of our body heat from our hands and feet. Lastly, you may want to consider getting a personal space heater if you really can’t get the thermostat to change.

How to Deal with Heat

While we don’t have to deal with extreme heat here in Michigan, it can still get pretty warm in your home. If you’re dealing with heat in your home, try following some of these recommendations:

  • Be smart about sunlight. The sun can heat up your home a lot. Use your curtains and blinds to block out Earth’s free heater from warming your home.
  • Fans won’t lower the temperature in your home, but can cool you off by introducing wind chill.
  • Get creative. Ice packs, a damp towel, and light clothing can all help you stay cool this summer.
