Common Water Heater Issues in Colder Months

Water heaters aren’t something many homeowners keep top of mind, that is until something goes wrong. As the weather gets colder, the last thing you’ll want to deal with are issues with your water heater. Stepping into the shower in the middle of fall or winter and feeling unexpected freezing cold water is never ideal and can cause quite the inconvenience for your household.

In this blog, you’ll learn about some common issues you might face in the colder months with your water heater. Keep an eye out for these problems and if you experience any of them, Haisma Heating & Cooling will be right over to inspect your water heater.

Inconsistent Temperatures

Cold weather can seriously impact your plumbing system and in some cases will force your water heater to overwork itself. When your water heater is working harder than usual, your home’s water temperatures can start to fluctuate. If you notice the water in your home is taking longer than usual to heat up, isn’t heating up at all, or you’re running out of hot water faster than you typically would, this is a sign your water heater is in need of repair.

Lack of Insulation

Just like you bundle up in your winter coats as the weather gets colder, you should keep that same mindset for your water heater! If you have an electric water heater, neoprene foam is a great way to protect it during the winter. However, if you have a gas water heater, fiberglass wrap that is secured by aluminum foil is your best bet. An insulated water heater will prevent it from losing the heat your family needs, which means your water can heat up faster.

Mineral Buildup

It’s no surprise that sediment and minerals can build up at the bottom of your water heater’s tank, which can prevent your water from heating up. This is why it’s important to flush your water heater regularly. If the sediment and other minerals are left accumulating, your water heater will have to overwork itself to produce hot water, which can waste energy.

At Haisma Heating & Cooling, we know how important it is to have consistent hot water in your home, especially during the colder months.
