Spooky Things We Find in Air Ducts

Air ducts are the most invisible, but perhaps one of the most important parts of your HVAC system. You need them to transfer over the air that has been treated by your AC or furnace around your home. However, the mysteriousness of what could be hiding behind your walls can be a bit spooky to some. In the spirit of Halloween, we wanted to explain some of the weirdest and scariest things that could be in your air ducts.

Dead Animals

I’m not sure if this is scary or just plain gross, but either way, it’s a very unsettling thought! Air ducts mimic the tunnels that many animals naturally gravitate towards, so it’s no wonder that raccoons, mice, and squirrels can all find their way into your ducts and cause trouble. Other times trouble finds them and now you have a dead rodent in your ducts.

Obviously, this can cause poor indoor air quality and weird smells, so you want to get rid of one of these as soon as possible.

Dust, Mold, and Dirt

While it’s unlikely that your home, in particular, has a dead animal in its ductwork. This one is far more common. Your air ducts naturally fill with dust and sometimes even mold if your home is too humid. This is why it’s so important to get your ducts cleaned every three to five years if you can!

The important thing to know is to not forget about your ductwork! While they aren’t obvious they have a big impact on your home. To end on a lighter note, you should check your vents especially after you move into a new home. If movies like Amelie or No Country for Old Men are to judge, you could find intriguing old possessions or a briefcase full of cash!
